DEFINATION OF TARIQA AL’WIYAH[1]

 

Al Habib Ahmad bin Hasan Al-Attas, may Allah be pleased with him, was asked about the definition of Tareqa Al'wiyah and he replied -:

His introvert inner self followed the guidelines as taught by Imam Ghazali and his extrovert self followed the teaching of Imam Syazili. In brief it could be elucidated as the followings-:

peacefulness and steadfastness

or turning attention and fronting

or break away from existing state of affairs and moving to another state

or guidance and tranquillity

or to over write and strengthen certitude

or to put in practise and elevate

or peacefulness and refuge in complete submission to Allah

just as Habib Abdul Rahman bin Abdullah Bil Faqih expounded as to “ follow the attestation towards the distinctive path

A person asked Al Habib Ahmad bin Hasan that there are people who were questioning that the definition possesses complexities and difficult to understand. He replied “Nowadays people would not ask except on ambiguity but not on connotation and purpose. The way of the predecessor is to observe practises at specific period and discontinue as enjoined, and premeditate intention at its rightful stance and keep away within confines. All of these could be found in the poetry of Al Habib Abdullah bin Alwi Al Haddad-:

Have perseverance on the Book of Allah and adhere to the way of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم and follow the guidance of the predecessors, in the hope that you would also receive guidance.

We will not deliberate except with what is in our heart. For those whose hearts are open and willing to abide, we would extend our personal discourse. For those who just want to know, we would extend only the language axioms but for those who are busy-bodies (who simply joined in and being irrelevant and do not contribute in any form), we just avoid and isolate them.

The tariqa ‘Alawiyya which eschewed esoteric practices, emphasised scholarship, and recognised the need to engage in worldly activities, while opposing materialism.
